The Tooth Fairy Story Review: Cartoon Adventure with a Touch of Family-Friendly Preteen Romance

In this cartoon journey for preteens, the fairy community focuses on gathering teeth from slumbering youngsters and placing gold under their pillows. Board-riding youthful nonconformist fairy Van (brought to life by Booboo Stewart) shows little enthusiasm about devoting his life to gathering baby teeth—a feeling that’s completely understandable. He is just slightly more curious about the financial workings behind it all: the fairies deliver the teeth to unseen goblins, who provide metal in exchange. But Van’s curiosity grows when he spots a goblin (voiced by Larkin Bell), who proves to be not at all the hideous creature he expected.

An Unlikely Connection and Shared Threat

Everything is prepared for an adventure with a gentle touch of teen romance (even though it remains perfectly appropriate for younger kids). The fairy and goblin communities are separated from each other, and nothing fuels the excitement of secrecy to bring people as one. Both groups portrayed in the film are remarkably alike, yet each holds biased views about the other. Fairies are said to be entitled sorts, given to taking whatever they fancy, while the goblins are reportedly stupid, smelly, and backward, but are in fact bright and advanced in technology.

Naturally, this scenario needs a common enemy to unite against, and that need is met in the form of some nasty spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret with these guys: they aim to devour the fairies and goblins, and they serve as quite savage, though not particularly skilled, villains.

Target Audience and Overall Impression

You won’t find very many children’s animations aimed at the viewer group that is beginning to have early romances, but are not mature enough for the content 14-year-olds are watching in lieu of Twilight. If your child is in the right age bracket, this is unlikely to become their new favorite movie, but you could do worse.

A Tooth Fairy Tale arrives in movie theaters in Scotland from 10 October and across the United Kingdom beginning October 24.
