Previous Federal Bureau of Investigation Head James Comey Submits Not Guilty Plea to Allegations of Misleading Lawmakers
Former Federal Bureau of Investigation head James the former director has denied the charges to giving untrue testimony to US legislators and hindering a legislative process.
His lawyer entered the answer acting as his counsel in a federal court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on Wednesday.
Patrick Fitzgerald announced he would seek to have the proceedings dismissed for multiple factors including that his the accused, a detractor of Donald Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.
The former director was formally accused just days after Donald Trump urged his top legal official to proceed against him.
Legal Proceedings
In court on Wednesday, the defense counsel the legal representative advised the court they aimed to present various legal requests to dismiss the proceedings before a court case, stating the legal action was spiteful and that a US attorney was improperly appointed to take over the legal matter.
The former director's legal matter was initially managed by a Virginia prosecutor, who stepped down under influence from the former president after his investigation into a different rival - the New York official - was unable to initiate prosecution.
Courtroom Atmosphere
The former director appeared in optimistic frame of mind as he entered the court on mid-week, chatting with his attorneys and making jokes. He was joined by his partner, his wife and daughter Maureen, a federal prosecutor who the previous administration recently fired.
After listening to the judge recite his rights and the pair of allegations against him in legal proceedings on Wednesday, James Comey was questioned if he comprehended the allegations.
"Absolutely your honour. Thank you," he stated to the proceedings.
Previous Events
Mr Comey was the FBI Director from 2013 to 2017 and was fired about a few months into the former president's initial presidency as commander-in-chief. At the moment, Mr Comey was leading an investigation into Russian election interference and whether there were any connections between the Russian government and the presidential campaign.
During his tenure, the director caused a counter-response from the Democratic party when he announced just days before the 2016 election that he was investigating Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton's use of a personal email system. Legal actions against Clinton were not pursued, resulting in criticism from conservative politicians as well.
Current Allegations
The federal government allege Mr Comey lied to Congress during a congressional hearing in 2020 when he was being interrogated about both the email probe as well as the Russia election probe. They allege he deceived the Senate by saying he had not approved an individual at the FBI to release to media organizations details about the FBI investigations.
Legal representatives also allege James Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to sway, hinder and impede" the legislative group by giving misleading testimony to it.
Personal Comments
Through a recording the former director posted to his online platform after he was charged, he declared he was wrongly accused and alleged Donald Trump of behaving like a "dictator".
"We have been aware for a long time that there are consequences to standing up to Mr Trump," he stated. "We will not live on our bended knee."
"I have done nothing wrong," he added. "Thus initiate a legal proceeding."
The accusations against the former director emerged after Trump posted on online platforms insisting on his attorney general, the attorney general, prosecute Mr Comey and other people.
