Labuschagne Dropped from Australia's One-Day International Squad to Face India

The Australian selectors have left out Labuschagne from the three-match ODI series facing India, with high-performing Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw earning a unexpected selection.

Recent Form Result in Omission

Labuschagne has been omitted from the ODI squad following managing only a single run in his two batting efforts during the top-end series against South Africa in August. The right-hander has a best innings of 47 in his most recent ten ODI batting appearances.

The batsman has featured in 68 one-day internationals and scored 1,871 ODI runs at an batting average of 34.64, but will now work towards a Test team comeback in time for the Ashes beginning in Perth on November 21.

Surprise Inclusion and Team Updates

There have been indications of a return to form with 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw scored a hundred for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.

The left-hander may to make his white-ball international debut in the upcoming series against India after last being included in an ODI squad in 2022.

The left-hander has played 14 Test matches with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also aiming for a Test return as Australia search for a answer to their batting top-order problems.

Pace Additions and Fitness Updates

Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc is back for the ODI series against India after taking a break since performing well for Australia in the whitewash of West Indies in July.

BBL performer Mitch Owen could make his ODI debut after suffering a concussion in the lead up to Australia’s last 50-over series against South Africa.

ODI captain Pat Cummins remains on the sidelines as he aims to recover from a spinal issue in time to captain Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.

Squad Selection Strategy and Schedule

Australia have selected a squad for only the initial two T20 matches against India with the upcoming Ashes series, although Glenn Maxwell will miss all of the five-match series due to a wrist injury sustained in New Zealand.

Mitch Marsh will skipper both the ODI and T20 teams after scoring a hundred in the last match against New Zealand to seal a two-nil victory last week.

“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be some management through the back end of the series as individuals prepare for the cricket season through domestic first-class matches,” selection chief George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an important period in the build towards the T20 World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously get ready certain individuals for the Test matches ahead.”

Australia’s three-match ODI series against India begins on October 19 in Perth, before the rivals play five T20s from October 29.
